Publisher also encourages writers to become familiar with some of their authors' work; Julie Beard, Barbara Bretton, Catherine Coulter, Suzanne Forster, Laura Kinsale, Jayne Ann Krentz, Lynn Kurland, Jill Marie Landis, Nora Roberts, Maggie Shayne, etc.

NEW: Publisher is interested in darker romances for a new line they are proposing to release in Spring 2003. As yet un-named, the line will allow for all types of paranormal elements. But the stories should be emotional, darker in nature, with no fluff. (No, the word Gothic is not mentioned in this market release post, but me thinks this might be the "air" publishers are trying for) Stories should be 100,000 words and first and foremost a romance. Submit your manuscript or synopsis and three-sample chapters to Berkley Senior Editor Gail Fortune or Editor Cindy Hwang.

GUIDELINES
Four Arabesque romances are published each month. These novels feature heroes and heroines of non-Caucasian heritage. Publisher publishes romances with predominately African-American characters. The hero is tall, dark and handsome, dealing with an issue of trust or fear or some other flaw, but must not be dishonest. The heroine is beautiful, smart, successful and with her own issue of trust or fear, but can not be a man-hater. Heroine can not be sexually involved with anyone at the time she meets hero, and the hero can not be emotionally involved with anyone at the time he meets heroine. Educational level and Professions can very, but publisher encourages writers to note that the staple of their audience is educated middle class. Also, make note that characters should not be living together--this the publisher feels suggests that there is no commitment.

SEND
Cover letter that mentions any previous published work. Include with cover, a two or three page synopsis that covers the main plot points and the first three chapters of MS. Writer's name and address should be typed on first page of ms. DO NOT send computer disks.

WORD COUNTS
80,000 to 100,000 words

CURRENTLY SEEKING
Multi-cultural contemporary genre romances only: The romance and interaction between the couple should be the main focus of the plot. Also welcome: good sub-genre plots such as, adventure, mystery or humor elements. Social issues are also welcomed as long as they don't overcome the romance.

CURRENTLY SEEKING

Are currently seeking submission for their CANDLEGLOW LINE, They are also seeking historical, time travel, futuristic and paranormal romances.

NOTE ON CANDLEGLOW:

"With the dark heroes popularity on the upswing again, Love Spell has brought back a mainstay of romance, the Gothic. These stories are set against dark backdrops such as castles and keeps on deserted moors, and the romances are mainly told from the heroine's pov. These stories often revolve around naive heroines who are placed in close proximity with--often under the protection of --heroes, whom they knows little and whom they suspect and even fear. However , these enigmatic heroes are often those who claim our hearts and seduce our bodies, and the unveiling of their mystery is part of the path to true love. The challenge of writing a Gothic for Candleglow, along with creating an evocative, ominous setting, is maintaining a powerful sexual attraction the heroine feels for the hero--despite any questions she may have regarding her safety and the trustworthiness of her lover. The focus of the story should remain on the development of the relationship between the hero and heroine, and not shifted to other plot concerns. Although these romances can contain paranormal elements, they should be strictly historical in regards to time and setting and as sensual as possible."

"All novels should be atmospheric according to the chosen subject. Make sure the "new-age" element is strong enough to carry the story. If the element can be lifted out of the story and a publishable story still exists, the element is not strong enough. Also, in the case of time travels, the method of transportation must be reasonable and not cliched. Characters transported in time should address the issue of language, i.e., how does the character cope with the language differences? And how does the character deal with the change in lifestyles? Do they miss modern conveniences? If not, why?"

GUIDELINES

Publisher does not use guideline or tip sheets. They are not looking for mss that have been tailored to what the writer thinks is vogue. They want books the writer feels passionate about. The best way to get published by this publisher is for the writer to write a book they love and want to read. Best advice publisher can give writers is, . . . " try to go for the emotional jugular: really funny, or really sexy , or really scary, or really tear -jerking

SEND

Publisher does not accept unsolicited mss but will work with unagented writers and invite them to query. If the writer's query piques their interest, they will ask for the rest.

CURRENTLY SEEKING

The publisher is not over inventoried and have plenty of room for books they think are great. Interested in anything that is written from the heart with a commercial hook. However at this time are they are not looking for is Regencies, but they will selectively consider Regency-set -historicals. They are looking for more Scottish historicals, more medieval, and Regency historicals as well as sexy paranormal and contemporary romantic comedy.

GUIDELINES

Very few of the publisher published books can be described as simply romances. Their historical novels for example, have two or more plots, one of which is romance and these are usually secondary plots.. They are open to paranormal, horror, SF/Fantasy, and time travel novels with romantic elements. However the non-romantic elements must serve as more than window-dressing. " In other words, if your male lead character is a vampire, that should be a larger part of his life than an occasional neck-bite." They want woman characters to use their brains and play an active role in the solving their problems. " We're not interested in shrinking violets or quivering masses of nerves( at least not as permanent personality traits)

CURRENTLY SEEKING

In historical fiction, they are looking for submission set in almost any time and place, though they are only "lightly" interested in Victorian/Edwardian urban settings. Things they ARE NOT SEEKING; seriously unappealing heroes, . . . "because they make the reader wonder why the heroine is willing to put up with him. Mysteries where the solution is obvious to the reader by the end of the third chapter, . . " but that the protagonists takes another 200 pages to figure out". Historical which are poorly researched. Or tales in which a conversation would solve the problems and writer uses seeming contrived machinations to keep the love interests from really talking to each other.
